Building and upgrading a key transport route while traffic continues to flow places high demands on both planning and delivery. In the E4 Sikeå project, NYAB reconstructed and widened the road to improve road safety and traffic flow along an important route in northern Sweden.

The contract included the conversion of the road into a median-separated 2+1 carriageway, together with extensive earthworks, rock excavation, material handling and culvert works. The project also included construction of the road structure, paving works, safety barriers and noise mitigation measures, as well as a new pedestrian and cycle bridge in Gumboda and a wildlife crossing at Granberget to improve accessibility and facilitate wildlife movement along the route.

The works were carried out under live traffic conditions, requiring construction activities to be continuously adapted to road users and other stakeholders. Rock excavation and blasting operations within the road corridor placed additional demands on coordination, safety and detailed production planning throughout the project. The contract also included works related to water management, biologically adapted wildlife crossings and cultural heritage sites, requiring further consideration of environmental aspects throughout delivery.

Through established working methods, local presence and experience from complex infrastructure projects, NYAB was able to complete the contract while maintaining traffic flow throughout the construction period. The project demonstrates the company’s ability to deliver major road infrastructure projects where construction, traffic management and safety must operate in parallel to create long-term value for both society and the client.
