From local projects to Nordic partnerships
History is about more than dates. Behind every milestone is a decision, a new partnership or a capability that has shaped what NYAB can do today.

The decisions that shaped NYAB.
It all started in Luleå in 1990. Operating under the name Nyanläggarna Luleå, the company took on local projects and built its business close to customers and communities. Since then, new directions, capabilities and partnerships have taken the company into new markets and increasingly complex projects within infrastructure, energy and industry.
A new direction under new ownership
For its first 21 years, Nyanläggarna Luleå operated on a relatively small scale. When Johan Larsson and Mikael Ritola acquired the company in 2011, a decisive shift began. The focus moved towards new specialisations and the business started to expand.
In spring 2013, Johan Larsson took on the role of full-time CEO. Operational and administrative capabilities were strengthened while the civil engineering business continued to grow. This marked the beginning of a growth phase that would significantly expand both the scale of the company and its offering.
A new name and broader capabilities
The company adopted the name NYAB. Acquisitions including HT-Bygg and the civil engineering company MMS broadened the company’s expertise, while new offices in Kiruna and Gällivare strengthened its presence across northern Sweden.
The name change reflected an ambition to grow and take on a broader range of projects. The acquisitions added expertise in construction, civil engineering, assembly and fencing solutions.
Growth gains momentum
During these years, both the business and the trust of customers continued to grow. Revenue increased from SEK 300 million in 2015 to nearly SEK 500 million by the end of 2017, while projects became larger and more complex.
NYAB expanded into aggregates and quarry operations and established NYAB Infrastructure, focusing on road construction, municipal contracts and maintenance services for the Swedish Transport Administration. A new office in Kalix further strengthened the company’s local presence.
From regional presence to national reach
New projects and new locations took NYAB into additional markets. The company delivered its first complex railway project, opened offices in Piteå and Haparanda, and established operations in the Mälardalen region and Stockholm. Revenue surpassed SEK 1 billion.
In 2020, NYAB signed its first road maintenance contract with the Swedish Transport Administration. Revenue exceeded SEK 1.4 billion and the organisation had grown to more than 200 employees.
“When we bought the company the goal was to pass one billion in revenue by 2020. We made it with a year to spare.”

Focusing on what we do best
NYAB streamlined its operations and focused on its core areas: infrastructure, energy and industry. Traditional building construction activities were phased out, while the company’s presence in Stockholm continued to strengthen.
This strategic focus created a clearer direction for the business and laid the foundation for continued organic growth in projects where NYAB’s expertise and way of working could deliver the greatest value. The company’s volume in Stockholm doubled during the period.
A strategic step into Finland
To create a platform for continued growth, NYAB entered the Finnish market in 2022 through a reverse acquisition of Skarta Group. The transaction marked the beginning of a new phase in the company’s development, strengthening its position in the Nordic market and establishing a First North listing in Finland.
Through the merger, businesses such as Niskasen Maansiirto, Sitema and Skarta Energy became part of the Group, contributing complementary expertise and market positions. In 2024, a cross-border reorganisation was completed and the share listing was transferred from Nasdaq First North Growth Market Finland to Nasdaq First North Premier Growth Market Sweden. This established the structure that forms the foundation of today’s NYAB.
A broader offering takes shape
In 2025, NYAB strengthened its position through acquisitions within consulting services and project staffing. Together with existing operations, these additions created a broader offering that enables NYAB to support customers from early-stage advisory services through project delivery and completed facilities.
As energy, industrial and infrastructure investments become increasingly complex, the need for partners that can contribute from the earliest stages of project development continues to grow. For NYAB, combining execution capabilities with expertise in planning, engineering and project management is a natural step in that development.
By contributing early in the process, NYAB can help shape project conditions, improve quality throughout the project lifecycle and strengthen its role as a long-term partner to customers.
At the same time, the Consulting business segment was established and, together with Civil Engineering, forms the foundation of today’s operations.
With more than 1,000 employees across Finland, Sweden and Norway, NYAB is today a Nordic partner for energy, industrial and infrastructure investments throughout the project lifecycle.
Much has changed. The drive remains.
From local civil engineering projects in Norrbotten to complex infrastructure, energy and industrial projects across the Nordic region, NYAB has grown through new capabilities, partnerships and markets. The company’s story has been shaped by the people behind it and their willingness to develop, collaborate and take on new challenges.
