Collision-free road with bridges and new infrastructure between Svensbyn and Vitsand

Project: Expansion of a collision-free road
Project duration: August 2020 – January 2023
Size: SEK 230 million
Project status: Completed
Client: Trafikverket
City, country: Svensbyn–Vitsand, Sweden
Business segment: Infrastructure

NYAB upgraded the road section between Svensbyn and Vitsand to create a safer and more accessible environment for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians. The project included a new collision-free road, new bridges, and extensive civil engineering and utility works along the route.

The contract was delivered as a design and build project and involved the upgrade of 5.5 kilometres of road into a collision-free highway between Svensbyn and Vitsand. As part of the scheme, four kilometres of illuminated pedestrian and cycle path were constructed, together with approximately three kilometres of connecting and local roads.

The project included earthworks, grading, rock excavation, mass earthworks, culvert installations and multi-layer pavement construction. Utility works were also carried out, including water, wastewater and pressure sewer pipelines, directional drilling and the construction of a pumping station.

A key element of the project was the construction and upgrade of four bridges along the route. Two new bridges were built, one existing bridge was widened together with an adjacent pedestrian and cycle path, and one pipe bridge was adapted to the new road design. Safety barriers, noise mitigation measures and wildlife fencing were also installed along the route.

The delivery required coordination across several engineering disciplines within the same contract. Road, bridge, utility and earthworks were carried out in parallel while extensive earthworks and environmental measures were integrated into the production process. The project was delivered in geotechnically challenging ground conditions, where surcharge embankments were constructed to create stable conditions for the new road. The contract also included the handling and disposal of sulphide-bearing soils and other materials requiring special management.
The project demonstrates NYAB’s ability to deliver complex infrastructure contracts where multiple construction disciplines are integrated within the same project. Through a comprehensive design and build approach, the scheme has improved road safety, accessibility and infrastructure between Svensbyn and Vitsand.
